Liberty University’s provost was a senior Moonie apostle and collaborator 12

Liberty University’s current provost, Ron Godwin, was appointed by Rev. Sun Myung Moon to take his teachings and use them to revive and resurrect American Christianity. Moon knew Godwin intimately, and repeatedly praised him publicly for his usefulness in taking the Moonie message to the American Christian church.

Rev. Moon explains something in one of the leadership talks in which he often praised Ron Godwin

Godwin attracted attention last week when he appeared to announce a new partnership between Liberty University and Benny Hinn, a claim that the university has denied, even though Hinn still promotes the partnership.

An earlier post here pointed out that the two Liberty representatives in the Hinn deal shared a common history in their financial connections to the Moonies, though Pajama Pages reader Matthew Grant McDaniel, a Liberty alum who has called for Godwin’s resignation, pointed me to a series of Moon sermons that show that Godwin’s ties to Moon’s Unification Church were deep and intimate.

Moon loved and trusted Godwin, and saw him as a personal disciple and apostle.

Moon, who referred to himself as Father, wanted Godwin in the vanguard of his effort to reform American Christianity, just as Moon was trying to reform communism. From a Moon “sermon” (they are just rambling streams of consciousness, really) in June 1991:

Christianity needs the same overhaul [as communism], the same thing. Christianity in America alone will never amount to anything and they know that as well as we do. We have to revive them.

Ron Godwin, Robert Grant and Donald Sills and Dr. Pak formed a revival group. They all agreed. Last Friday, Father went to Washington and persuaded them. Each one understood. They will lead the revival of American Christianity.

Grant and Sills were Baptist preachers who were involved in various Moonie front groups, which often masqueraded as part of the religious right in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Moon’s sermon continued in the similar vein with his description of his patient infiltration of American culture.

They [people in your hometowns] are like sheep, just waiting for you. You need to occupy this position. This is restoration tradition, clear. Father has everything, the professors’ world, media world, summit club world. Father can use high level people, no problem. Do you understand?

At the time, Godwin was Moon’s agent in America’s media infiltration, acting as the VP of the Washington Times. He would also serve to get Moon into the Baptist church, as represented by Jerry Falwell, and the professors’ world through Liberty University.

In June of 1991, Moon returned to the theme of American revival, which was going to be achieved with Godwin’s help.

Father went to Washington and met all these headstrong people like Ron Godwin, Don Sills, Bob Grant and Congressman Icord and told them that now it is their responsibility to revive and resurrect American Christianity. Father told them, “Through The Washington Times, I fought against communism successfully. So I must go on to my world mission.” Father’s work is saving the world. It is America’s mission to save American Christianity. Father cannot do America’s mission for them. They understood and Father formed a revival team and they are going to seriously go for big-city revivals. In July, they will do such major American cities as New York, Washington, and Los Angeles. They are going to have an all-out revival meeting embracing all Christian ministers, because they too are Christian ministers. We need to support them and prepare their base.

Now the plan is underway that we will go together with the big name ministries, as a joint revival team.

To Moon, revival did not mean a restoration of traditional or orthodox Christianity; it meant a transformation into something completely new, where Moon would be recognized as the Messiah in place of Jesus. This was the first part of his plan for America, in which Godwin had agreed be an integral part:

The revival of Christianity: the re-resurrection of Christianity. Actually, revival is going back to what it used to be. Once it used to be high, now they revive it back to that standard. That standard does not apply to what Father says, but what Father means here is to re-resurrect. Christianity is dead; now we want to re-resurrect it. That means if you resurrect, you come into the Jesus position, like a revival. Re-resurrect.

Besides the big-name ministries, Moon also wanted to establish a beachhead at Christian universities.

Every university has the main established churches present. Many of them have high-level children, the ministers’ and deacons’ children, attending them.

We are making a revival centering on those people…. Once we have made that kind of foundation on the campuses, we can influence society, proclaim to all the Protestant churches that we are working for the survival of American Christianity and the Christian cultural foundation.

In the same June sermon, he explains that he wants to control the professors’ world, the religious leaders, and political leaders. Jerry Falwell, who lead a church, a political movement and a university, was a perfect vessel. (I’m not saying that Falwell was a secret Moonie, but we know that Moon successfully targeted him, inducing Falwell to accept Moon’s money, then having Falwell appoint Moon’s disciple, Godwin, as his chief assistant and confidant. How aware Falwell was of this effort, we don’t know, but we do know that Godwin knew of and participated in the plan.)

In January 1992, Moon again addressed a meeting of the faithful, among whom was Ron Godwin. After emphasizing the need for absolute obedience to his wishes, Moon paused in his sermon and asked Godwin if he should go on.

That is the end of Act I. You want to have more? [Asking Dr. Sills, Dr. Grant and Dr. Godwin.] They seem to be enjoying it. I wonder how much they have become Unificationists, but Father says they seem to be enjoying it. The important thing is they can’t just be bystanders. Do you want to just sit in a comfortable chair and watch the show or do you want to do the show? Father is asking you. That is your mission from now on. Father would like to see your show.

Godwin here encourages Moon to continue his cultist rants, and is obviously being counted on to help collaborate in Moon’s vision for transforming America.

Father sees the presence of Dr. Ron Godwin, Dr. Bob Grant and Dr. Don Sills as very precious. Father looks at these precious three collaborators, supporters and members of this great movement almost like Jesus’ three disciples. The three of them are really accomplished giants in our world. By uniting with Reverend Moon’s ideology they will become even greater. Each of the three has very special characteristics. They are very different characters, as much as Jesus’ three major disciples were different from each other.

Godwin also knew that Moon was counting on him to help him influence Jerry Falwell.

Father invited Ron Godwin to join in this great crusade not because he is such a great business man. He is, but more importantly Father is concerned about Jerry Falwell, who represents the great Southern Baptist Christian community. He is not fulfilling his responsibility, so Father would like to see if Ron Godwin can fulfill it.

The highlight of the meeting was when Moon publicly appointed Godwin as his apostle to America.

I want to have some champions in the United States to take responsibility and move this country. You three [Grant, Sills and Godwin] can do the job.

You will be like the three disciples of Jesus. Each one of you will put your self in Jesus’ position and multiply three disciples of your own. Then your number will grow to a team of twelve. With twelve people of your character and determination, at this level, you will be invincible. Your catch phrase will be the that American Christianity needs resurrection more than revival. Let us resurrect American Christianity. It is crucial to the survival of this nation and the world….

[At this point, Dr. Grant, Dr. Sills and Dr. Godwin stood up and grasped their hands together, holding them high. Father waded through several rows of members to himself grasp the clasped hands of the three, making four.]

Reverend Moon is going to go up and have a little meeting with Mrs. Moon. Father will come down shortly but Father would like us to proceed with the testimonies of these three men.

[Dr. Ron Godwin gave his testimony talking about the USA activities and his part in it. Afterwards Dr. Pak gave a testimony about Dr. Godwin and his first meeting with Father at Danbury. Father returned, and Ron Godwin made a presentation to Father on behalf of the Washington Times family. It was a large drawing of an Atlantic salmon.]

{The braces within that quote are from the original transcript.}

How the drawing of a salmon explained Godwin’s mission, I don’t know, though not much in these sermons made logical sense anyway. The rampant insanity of his leader apparently didn’t scare Godwin away, because he was found in attendance at a Moon sermon in April 1993, when Moon was again delighted to see him and interrupted his thoughts on unity to say, “I see that Bob Grant’s couple and Ron Godwin’s couple have come here for this early Sunday morning service.”

For a flavor of just how unhinged Moon was, immediately after acknowledging Godwin’s attendance, Moon returned to one of his favorite topics–the sexual relationship between men and women.

When you observe a man and woman kissing passionately in public, does that mean they are most united and harmonized? Men and women must be united not just lip to lip, but also through their sexual organs….

Men and women are essentially the same except for one area: the reproductive organs. Man has the male sexual organ, woman has the female sexual organs. That is the one area which is truly different between men and women. By unifying those two areas of men and women, the goal of total perfection shall be achieved. That was God’s design and plan at the very beginning. When that perfect unity centering upon True Love is achieved, the entire universe will echo it, shouting out praises and cheers. [Father draws on blackboard] Here, vertically up and down, horizontally east and west, you have the same principle in action.

It’s obvious that Godwin had become a trusted Moonie missionary, despite his history as a leader of Falwell’s Moral Majority and his continuing ties to Falwell and Liberty. Moon was convinced that Godwin was a convert.

Today we have the very distinguished guests such as Dr. Grant and Dr. Godwin. The mere fact that they have come to listen to my sermon today is a miracle because of the fact that they were so different in their attitude in the beginning. Before coming to understand me and my teaching, they felt that I was a bad man. They totally misunderstood me.

I am honestly proclaiming that the era of Jesus is over and this world will never be united by the power of Jesus because the providence of God is moving forward, just as the work of Jesus is moving forward. If traditional Christianity would just listen to me with an open mind for one week, they would all be turned around. Why? Because the truth is obvious. The truth is self-explanatory. The only people who have difficulty and are resistant to this truth are, unfortunately, ministers and elders of the established churches.

What these sermons establish, besides the fact that Moon was a loon, is that Godwin knew that he was being recruited as a collaborator to infiltrate the American church, media and educational institutions. He cannot tell us that he didn’t know what Moon stood for, because Moon himself was convinced that Godwin was on board. How do you not notice a declaration that “the era of Jesus is over” a couple of sentences after your name has been called out?

It was this summer of 1993 that Godwin and Falwell met a Moonie representative in Lynchburg, then just one year into the post-Jesus era, Godwin joined Falwell in a secret flight to Korea to meet with Moon. By 1995, Moon was was funneling millions of dollars though Godwin and his associates to pay off Liberty University’s debt.

Perhaps Godwin has had a change of heart and repented of his participation in the Moonie cult (if so, there’s no public record of it that I have found), but if he had decided to keep following Moon’s marching orders, what might he have done?

Become the vice chancellor of America’s largest Christian university and commit the school to a relationship with one of the world’s most notorious false teachers?

Rev. Moon would be proud.

I am stunned. Been reading around the blogosphere on this one and as always happens those who have heavily invested in a “Christian” institution are having a hard time facing facts. This wasn’t one rogue employee. This was an orchestrated long term strategy taht started with Falwell Sr. Yes it was about money but one does not sell out ones soul for money if they are believers. One does not cavort with cults for money.

Sure there are a lot of decent folks at Liberty who believe in the instution. They were duped. But now some are buying into the wrong belief that you can prop up good and evil at the same time and ignore what it really means to do so. Their leadership were frauds. And all for what? A culture war they kept losing anyway because they did not understand that it is about our character and integrity, too. The ends justified the means. And now Benny Hinn? How much do they expect people to ignore? (Never mind all the other stuff: Driscoll, Furtick, Caner, Mormons, etc)

Everyone associated with Liberty needs to do some serious soul searching. For those who labored away there –they need to ask themselves why they trusted in an institution and celebrity Christians….instead of Christ. And no, they are not the same thing

I think, despite anyone’s best efforts to alert and inform people of the truth, ultimately pragmatism, power, and complacency has won out. Liberty released a statement today declaring what they will be doing with Dr. Godwin as a result of the Hinn incident. Here’s what it said, in full:

Liberty University President Jerry Falwell announced Friday that Dr. Ronald Godwin’s duties and responsibilities will be focused solely on academic matters going forward.

Since late 2010, Dr. Godwin has served as Liberty’s Provost and Senior VP for Academic Affairs. In the last two years, Dr. Godwin has also assumed responsibilities associated with a varied array of initiatives designed to leverage Liberty University’s strengths with new and innovative educational projects external to the University. These projects included new programs and strategic alliances to deliver Liberty’s educational services both domestically and internationally.

“The incident with Benny Hinn Ministries convinced me how incompatible the two roles are,” President Falwell said. “I also realized it was not humanly possible for any one person to perform all the tasks necessary to do both jobs well. Dr. Godwin and I met early today and discussed which of his two roles he should continue to serve. After a lengthy discussion, we decided that Dr. Godwin should focus solely on Liberty’s academic programs in his role as Provost.”

Dr. Godwin, 76, explained the background context for the move. “A dear friend of mine believed he had a contract that permitted him to use Liberty University’s name and materials in a way that I now realize he did not. I should have verified this but instead trusted in his recollection,” said Dr. Godwin. “I have apologized to President Falwell for this error and am grateful that I can continue to contribute to Liberty University’s health and success.”

Dr. Godwin’s refined role will help ensure the error does not repeat itself, according to President Falwell. “The University will continue to rely on Dr. Godwin’s breadth of academic and administrative experience. He will spend the next few years grooming his successors and guiding the team responsible for Liberty University’s pending ten year accreditation reaffirmation report.”

“Dr. Godwin has served at Liberty since 2004. I greatly value his contributions during that time,” President Falwell said. “Dr. Godwin was instrumental in helping my father implement a very aggressive enrollment growth plan for Liberty beginning ten years ago when Liberty had just emerged from a decade of financial struggles and while many thought it imprudent to incur the risks inherent in growth. Three years ago, he stepped in as Provost and created efficiencies and academic quality controls to effectively manage Liberty’s robust growth. I am confident that Ron will be even more effective now as he is deployed in this more focused role.”

Dr. Godwin added, “I welcome this opportunity to focus my efforts on the Provost duties, which, at the world’s largest Christian university, is more than enough for anyone to say grace over.”

Daniel K. Williams, in his book God’s Own Party, has the following to say of interest to this particular thread. In his discussion of Christian Voice, the “first national [New Christian Right] organization” established in early 1979, Williams references Gary Jarmin, Christian Voice’s lobbyist in Washington, DC. “[Jarmin] was a Southern Baptist whose evangelical bona fides were somewhat suspect because he had been a member of Reverend Sun Myung Moon’s Unification Church until 1974 and had not completely cut his ties to Moon’s organization. Though some questioned Jarmin’s commitment to evangelicalism, no one could impugn his conservative credentials. He had spent most of his career in political activism, first as secretary general of Moon’s Freedom Leadership Foundation, and then as a staff member of the American Conservative Union.” (164-165)

I was there. Dr Ron Godwin was a longtime distinguished Christian School administrator when he was approached by the Washington Times President to consider a position with the Washington Times. Dr.Godwin never has been a member of the Unification Church. He was also never a supporter of the Unification Church. He took the job with the Washington Times because he is a patriot and felt that people of good will who shared the belief America was at risk from secular humanism should collaborate with each across denominational lines to promote traditional values like faith freedom and family. The salary was also good. He saw the Washington Times as a possible educational counterbalance to the Washington Post aka Pravda on the Potomac. His natural return to Liberty University was just Dr. Godwin returning to his career as a Christian administrator.

Mike, that’s a nice, cleaned-up interpretation of his activity, but that’s not what Moon thought Godwin was doing. Read those transcripts again and pay particular attention to the sections where the chronicler, who liked Godwin, describes him joining hands in triumph after Moon commissions him to take his revival to America. We also see Moon impressed that Godwin showed up on a Sunday morning to hear him, then announces that the era of Jesus is over. Why, if Godwin objected to his beliefs, did he help connect Moon with Falwell? Remember, too, that Moon wanted Godwin to rescue Falwell, who had disappointed him, for his cause.

Godwin wasn’t just a newspaper administrator. He went all in for Moon, or at least had convinced Moon that he was.

After many podcasts from FightingfortheFaith, I came here and wanted to see your website.. Guess I would add my 2 cent in..

As the blog author points, Godwin is intimately involved with Moon. Seeing how bad the “Moonie cult” has spread in Korea and even here in NY, I would state that having direct talk and conversation with Moon is close to impossible unless you support his ideas and intimately know him. Moon does not show up in newspaper unless you present a good light of him (in Korea, the culture does place a high view and importance of honor and reputation). To state someone like Godwin is a neutral (or at best bystander) would not make any sense when access to Moon is very limited. So to state that he does not believe in Moon would require a public act or statement to show that. Do we see that from Godwin? We just don’t.

Great website.. Hope to come more often..

    Hi David,

Ron Godwin was never a supporter of the Unification Church in any way. he was a supporter of the Washington Times. He is a patriot who believed that people should cross denominational lines to work together when religious freedom is attacked when the least of us is attacked by the secular powers like is now happening in abundance with the administration of secular humanist President Barack Obama. Reverend Moon came to America from his small country South Korea because he believed America is God’s last best hope to protect freedom of people’s around the world. He stated that Communism is not only the enemy of man it is the enemy of God because it seeks to prevent even the name of God from being spoken. Communism promotes state atheism as it’s official policy. See the actions of North Korea today where Christians are executed if they are found distributing bibles and whole Christian families are put in prison camps for sharing their faith. While many Christian ministers sat on their hands in the fight against Communism and Communist regimes a few stood up like Reverend Jerry Falwell and spoke strongly for freedom , faith and family and God’s first institution, the family, under God. I would say as Christians we should focus on sharing the Good News and join together against secular humanism instead of wasting time seeking a jihad like compliance with any one personal interpretation of Jesus’s teaching such as Baptism only when an adult, baptism at birth, full immersion versus sprinkling. BTW Reverend Moon passed away two years ago.

    • David Rhee Apr 25, 2014 4:53 pm

      Hello Mike,

Hello and I hope this clarify my comment as well as my reply to your post. Let’s start..

First, Moon’s church is not Christian.. In actuality, it is a mixture of Christianity, Confucianism, Shamanism, and of course, anti-Communism. It is not the Gospel so to call Moon’s church, Christian, would be like stating Gnostics are Christian.. Both (Moon and Gnostics) add Christianity with a mixture of culture (and its wisdom) as well as secret knowledge/revelation.. Then it is packaged and called “Christianity”. True Christians would know from Paul’s writing that this would be a different gospel. Second, as Moon proclaimed himself (through his personal revelation) to be the Messiah and his church would proclaimed him to be the divinely-appointed savior. Even if we were to talk that Moon was stating that he is not the Messiah but the messiah, he getting direct revelation and that he got the “anointing of a person who inherits the mission of the messiah” would be more than questionable. When Christians are aware of the completeness of Christ’s work on the cross, why would Christ need a man to complete His work that He will complete Himself (in His second coming)? This does not even include many accounts of sexual advances, adultery, and promiscuity of Moon where he told his female followers that salvation comes from three period of sexual intercourse (which he was jailed in 1955 as one of many counts). Another point to make is that Moon does not believe the Bible is the Truth but rather a textbook to teach truth (see a big difference in theology). Why am I making such an issue? Because the theology of Moon is significant in how Godwin interacted and associated with Moon.

For one, Moon was not available for many people and live a very exclusive (and luxurious) life. So to have dialogue with Moon would mean you would have significant purpose or benefit for Moon. Be it for his own pleasures or his own agenda. You could tell me that I sound sinister but when his illegitimate children (who he begot through his adulterous relationships) can’t even talk to him, that should tell you his exclusivity. Godwin did not have one dialogue with Moon.. Rather, Godwin had multiple dialogues and interactions with Moon. This interactions involved Godwin’s position at the Washington Times and his executive vice president of Liberty University (where Moon has bailed them out of financial trouble). These events are not just coincidences but rather Godwin’s direct involvement.

So the question is what level of involvement? It is ironic that I look into the Moon’s speech/statement of Godwin…

As Sun speaks on June 1,1991:
“By the same token Christianity needs the same overhaul, the same thing.

They will lead the revival of American Christianity.”

The Father is Moon who is forming the revival group!!

His speech at the International Leaders’ Conference in 1/2/92

“During my entire life, nobody gave me one month’s salary. In seventy years I didn’t receive even one month’s salary. What about Robert Grant, Ronald Godwin and Donald Sills? Without receiving a salary would you stay here fighting or would you run away? This is serious talk. I’m looking for that kind of champion, the type of men and women who would be absolutely dedicated, giving every ounce of their energy for the re-creation of man and the world. Do you think Father is telling you some daydreamer’s scheme or is he expounding a principle which not only he is living, but the entire world can live?

God is the Creator. Reverend Moon is the re-creator. …

That is the end of Act I. You want to have more? (Asking Dr. Sills, Dr. Grant and Dr. Godwin.)They seem to be enjoying it. I wonder how much they have become Unificationists, but Father says they seem to be enjoying it. The important thing is they can’t just be bystanders. Do you want to just sit in a comfortable chair and watch the show or do you want to do the show? Father is asking you. That is your mission from now on. ……

(Speaking to these three men.) Father said you are lucky. If you fulfill your mission, fine. If you don’t fulfill your mission, that is fine too. The reason is you are responsible for the first generation. The second generation is already mine, I claimed them already. But I don’t want to see the first generation become like Moses’ flocks who perished in the wilderness. It is very difficult to wipe out the concepts initially implanted in the first generation. …

It is crucial to the survival of this nation and the world.

New York is a rotten place, you know that. 42nd Street is a living hell. Father would like to have 8th Avenue up to 42nd Street cleaned up. Only by resurrection of the Christian spirit can this be accomplished. You follow, right?

(At this point, Dr. Grant, Dr. Sills and Dr. Godwin stood up and grasped their hands together, holding them high. Father waded through several rows of members to himself grasp the clasped hands of the three, making four.)

Reverend Moon is going to go up and have a little meeting with Mrs. Moon. Father will come down shortly but Father would like us to proceed with the testimonies of these three men.

(Dr. It was a large drawing of an Atlantic salmon.

Dr. Pak then introduced Dr. Robert Grant as a man with a deep spiritual connection to Father. Dr. Grant then spoke about his work for God and the direction of the USA activities. Finally, Dr. Pak introduced Dr. Don Sills, who has completed a forty day workshop under Reverend Ahn. Don Sills spoke about his growing relationships with the Korean elders and how he came to work with our church. He ended by offering himself completely to Father’s service.)

      Father spoke again:

Time has passed very quickly, but Father is very satisfied and fulfilled in his heart because Father has been assured that the three heavenly musketeers will do the job. Father looks at them almost as heavenly locomotives pulling the train of America in the right direction. They are locomotives, but not electric ones, they are choo-choo trains. Father likes that sound. Don Sills said wake up America. What is a better way to wake someone up than by making a locomotive noise?

I feel very confident that even though I may not be here all the time, if you trust these three musketeers and unite with them and join with them and work together toward the goal, I am sure you will fulfill a great victory here in America.

Father has precise instructions he wrote last night, after long meetings all day that went until 1:30 in the morning.”

Knowing that Moon’s theology is not correct, why are you involved in Moon’s vision.. This is not discussing about religious freedom as you make the argument to be but spreading religion (a false one!).. The argument you could make is that Moon’s statement of the revival group do not make them part of Moon’s agenda or mission. But a revival group and appointment would need someone to appoint correct? Does not Moon’s speeches show that HE IS APPOINTING them? Were is the emphatic, “NO”? Knowing that Moon’s theology is wrong, where is Godwin’s actions for Moon’s repentance and confessions of sins?

Working with non-believers to stop social injustice is a good cause and I gladly encourage(like volunteer work with Salvation Army, Peace Corp, etc.) Nowadays, many people seem to mix up social justice with Christianity as if they are the same thing.. They are not.. As Christians, we should love our neighbor and do good works (that includes social justice). BUT the church is not in the world to do social justice. Rather its primary goal is to spread the Gospel, feed the flock in the church, and make disciples of men (the Great Commission)… Again, I ask another question… Why would you need to be appointed by Moon to promote social justice (like religious freedom) when you don’t need the church? Those speeches are not talking about social agenda but a religious agenda! See your argument fails because that is very clear with Godwin involvement with Moon. It is not platonic and active..

So Moon was using the Washington Times to create a positive and good influence of his religion.. His religion would not only be visible to the American public but also to gain positive light (and ultimately, acceptance and membership). Moon was trying to spread his religion to the US. He is just using the religious freedom agenda and his stance against communism to promote his religion.. Knowing that it is a false religion, why is Godwin involved?

I am all for Christian solidarity but this has nothing to do with unitynor was the root agenda about religious freedom from Moon. This is like yoking Christ with Satan.

The part I would like to state that we should fight to proclaim the Truth (which is the Word of God and its Good News)! That is our ultimate goal.. Just because someone who proclaim to be Christian and is against communism does not mean that person is Christian! For example, Bill Maher is against Mormons which is not Christianity.. Does that mean, Bill Maher is a Christian? No, he was raised from a Roman Catholic family and is an atheist and harsh critic of all religions.. For the church to survive we need to make sure our church is pure and in the Truth! Godwin didn’t do that but rather brought a wolf in sheep clothing in..

      As I end with Spurgeon:
“Unity in error is unity in ruin; we need unity in the Truth of God through the Spirit of God.”

So I ask again, why is Godwin involved with Moon? Is it really the social justice of going against Communism? Why so involved with Moon and “his appointment”? Does all this sound like social agenda or religious one?
